"The Real Thing": Intersectional Imperialism

A Buzzfeed article released on November 16th, 2018, advertises a film called “The Real Thing”, which highlights several controversial issues in American politics; imperialist nationalism and transgender rights/allyship. The film is poignant and does bring to light many issues that both military personnel and transgender women face.
However, none of the protagonists are people of color, which is particularly alarming since transgender women of color are extremely susceptible to violence in the United States. Additionally, the writers of the film seem to gloss over how imperialism is inherently violent, or how it supports the usage of violence as a tool for gaining power over nations overseas. It even implores the audience to feel sympathy for the soldier, who comes home to a daughter. The acceptance shown by this father to his daughter is indicative of an allied relationship and the strengthening of love between a parent and a child; however, using an identity which supports the widespread genocide and deaths of people of color across the world in the name of an America that supports and accepts transgender children is not an effective way to dismantle white supremacy or to show support for transgender Americans. Intersectional imperialism is still imperialism.

  1. Yeah I've definitely been noticing a lot of intersectional imperialism moments such as Don't Ask Don't Tell and the ban on transgender military recruits. I definitely agree that these intersections of who is being highlighted and who is not being highlighted is not examined often especially in the ways of dismantling white supremacy and dismantling transphobia also.
