White is Never "Othered"
Yet another shooting has occurred in the US and the New York Post tweeted that the murderer was "weird, loner danced in the garage." It's interesting that whenever one of these shootings happens by a white man their mental health is always referenced. However, no one ever talks about the mental healths of people of other races. This means that to have the mental health conversation is a privilege. It also doesn't other the white male, rather ostracizes other races who commit crimes.
Mental health is mostly discussed in white spaces when it pertains to celebrities or suspects. People of color are not given the space to talk about their mental health. When they are suspects of a crime, the media labels them as terrorists or makes it seem natural to be criminals. This is just another example of ultimate attribution error.
