"Woman"
Just when GQ Magazine thought they were doing something honorable by placing Serena Williams on the cover of the magazine as the GQ woman of they year they managed to cause outrage. Twitter exploded after the cover was released because the word woman was unnecessarily placed in quotation marks when on the other magazine covers honoring men of the year there are no quotation marks around the word men.
In a yahoo article sports writer Cassandra Negley explains that GQ has included women in the man of the year covers since 2003, but this is the first time the word woman has been in quotes.
This link will take you to all four covers of this years edition of the magazine which honor Michale B. Jordan, Henry Golding and Jonah Hill as well as Serena Williams.
The explanation by GQ for the design flaw is that "Woman" was the hand writing of Virgil Abloh, the designer who as of late writes everything in quotations. Even with this explanation there was still an enormous amount of outcry online.
This situation speaks to the heirachy of American society which place men above women and whether GQ intended this or not, that is still the result.

You bring a great point about whether GQ intended to write woman in quotations.I think that the medias job is not to create public outcry but at the end of the day there will always be people who are offended or disagree with someone. Media needs to work on how they do things like this because people are paying attention.
