2 Years Later & People are Still Outraged About "Me Before You"
The 2016 movie, Me Before You, caused extreme outrage when it was originally released, and two years later people are still reeling about the movies plot and ending.
The film focuses on a young man who is disabled after a horrible accident. His family hires a young woman as his caretaker and the two fall in love. However, instead of adding positive representation to the media and allowing representation of a disabled character as the leading man in a romantic comedy, the movie turns dark and tells the readers that being disabled is not worth living.
The disability community took to twitter before the movie was released to talk about why the movie is problematic and why people should boycott it. #MeBeforeEuthanasia began to trend on Twitter and people discussed why the movie was harmful to the disability community. People attacked the movie for only portraying disabled people as either inspirational or the object of pity. As we discussed in class, people with disabilities have been symbolically annihilated from the media. It is important that they are given fair and accurate representation and have characters that help normalize disabilities in society.
