Ariana Grande Slams Sexism in Music Industry

After being named Woman of the Year by Billboard, Ariana Grande took the opportunity to call out the sexism that exists in the music industry in an interview with the publication. Grande said it is much harder for women to dominate the charts compared to men and the standards that women need to meet are sexist. She also discussed the pressures that women face with having to fit a certain persona in order to be taken seriously. She said in the interview “you can be friendly and silly, and yet strong and indestructible. You can be professional and present, and also sexual and fun.”

I think Grande using her position to call out sexism in the industry is important as it helps when women in positions of power call out such a rampant problem. As we have discussed in class the way women are portrayed by the media is sexist as there is such a focus on women's appearance and not their accomplishments due to heteropatriarchy. I think the fact Grande is also calling out the double standards women face is also important as comments like those by Natalie Portman show earlier in the week if women are too sexy they are viewed as promiscuous and not taken seriously but if they are not sexy then they are viewed as prudes and not attractive. The music industry and the media need to do a better job of portraying women as multifaceted and not holding them to unattainable standards that when they do not meet them they just proceed to tear them down.

  1. Its unfortunate that women in Hollywood are held to different standards than men, especially when it comes to appearance. Actresses are expected to keep up an image that appeals to the male gaze outside of their projects. Unfortunately, none of this will change especially because of the entertainment news outlets.
