Diversity in the 2018 Golden Globes
The list of nominees for the 2018 Golden Globes was just released. With 4 out of 10 non-white directors for best film nominations, media outlets are celebrating it as the most diverse list. Although this should be celebrated, there is still not enough intersectionality in the Golden Globes.
I would argue that 4 out of 10 non-white directors is not enough to be applauded as diversity. One Independent article called criticized fellow media outlets, pointing out that female directors are still not included. This means that although it would be a better year for non-white men, women across the board are silenced even further.
It is dangerous to have such low standards when it comes to diversity. 4 out of 10 is better than past years, but it is still not time to settle. Women and other genders are still not included. Instead of celebrating too early, we should still push the Golden Globes, other award ceremonies, and the entertainment industry as a whole to strive to do better.
