A Show About Women, Sex, and Power

Sell/Buy/Date, a one-woman show by Sarah Jones, is about a professor set in the future who lectures her students about sex work in the present day. In an interview with Jones about the show, she explained that the show is about “women, sex, and power, and all of our relationships, wherever we are on the gender continuum, to sex commodification.” Jones then follows up with her wanting to make sure her ideas have a place to flourish, independent of what the commercial marketplace may say about sex work. Jones is performing at the Los Angeles L.G.B.T. Center through Nov. 18 after her successful run earlier this year at the Geffen Playhouse.

Jones’ show is an example of interesting, creative, and representational art that disrupts dominant media and societal concepts about women, sex, and power. This show’s ability to create a dialogue surrounding women being seen as sex objects is a timely and extremely relevant matter. Her decision to continue her performance at the L.A. LGBT Center also gives the people within that community a platform. A show about misconceptions, stereotypes, and sexism is an important step in the direction of having a more representational media.
