Blatant Sexism in the Media

Mac Miller dead at 26: Ariana Grande's rapper ex dies from apparent overdose

The media’s recent response to the death of rapper Mac Miller exposed the blatant sexism that is prevalent in our society. The Daily Mirror, a popular tabloid newspaper titled a recent article in response to Miller’s death “Ariana Grande’s rapper ex dies from apparent overdose.” This title is problematic for obvious reasons. Defining Mac Miller as “Ariana Grande’s ex” not only takes attention away from the tragic loss of the beloved musician, but it infers a certain blame on Grande. This infers that Grande had some sort of responsibility for Miller, his addictions, and death. Grande recently explained her decision to end her relationship with Miller due to it being toxic for her. This article’s title assigns a responsibility on Grande, inferring that she is to blame for not staying in an obviously toxic relationship to nurse him back to soberness. The media’s constant blame on women when it comes to the tragedy and downfall of a man reflects society’s problematic view of women.
