Miss America 2019
Miss New York Nia Franklin was named the winner of the 2019 Miss America Contest on Sunday night. According to a Washington Post article, Nia Franklin earned a $50,000 college scholarship that she hopes to use for a doctorate in music composition from Princeton or Juilliard. Most notably during the competition, Franklin sang Puccini's "Quando m'ev vo" during the talent portion. This is important because Franklin, an African American woman is showing a large audience of people that anyone is capable of singing opera.

Another incredible moment during the 2019 Miss America Contest was when Miss Michigan called attention to the Flint water crisis. I think that these women are using this competition to bring awareness to issues, showcase incredible talents, and impact a wide audience. These women are showing us that there is so much more to a person than outer beauty. They are breaking stereotypes and empowering other women to do so as well.
