Netflix's "On My Block" giving us #Afrolatinx girl magic

Netflix's original series "On My Block" is reminiscent of "Stranger Things" if instead of fighting lab creations, the pre-teen characters fought against gangs, the police and immigration. The show has a diverse cast featuring often symbolically annihilated ethnic groups like African Americans, Latinos and also Afro-Latinos.

Monse Finnie is one of the main characters who plays an Afro-Latino growing up in inner city Los Angeles. She lives with her father and was abandoned by her Latina mother long before she got the chance to know her. Part of Monse's story line is trying to find her mother and therefore, also this missing part of her Latina identity.

Monse is the only Afro-Latina character we get exposed to in the first season but it will be interesting to see how the identities of the characters develop in the following season. A major criticism of other widely known Latino shows, such as "Jane the Virgin", is that they lack Afro- Latinx characters or any discourse on race issues. Highlighting this intersectionality of Black Latinos is extremely important in media to not only eliminate stereotypes about Latinos, but to also to expand and highlight the diverse experiences of being Black.
