This year’s Emmy awards opened up with a song-and-dance performance called “We Solved It” which poked

fun at past awards ceremonies

that lacked diversity. The performance was a sarcastic take on T.V.’s

“progress” toward inclusion. The irony of this is that a majority of the awards

went to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a comedy about a white

Jewish woman.

Aside from a few moments of diversity, voters in the Academy of T.V. Arts

and Sciences managed to select winners that look no different from any

Emmy night from a decade ago.

The 2018 Emmys proved that the issue of lack of diversity continues

today. Poking fun and making light of the issue does more harm than

it helps. All this does is delegitimize the seriousness and importance of

the diversity in media issue.
