Trans Representation in the Straight White Male Dominated Hardcore Punk Scene
G.L.O.S.S. (Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit) is a trans-feminist hardcore punk band formed in 2014. In contrast to the straight white male dominated hardcore punk scene, G.L.O.S.S. is a band that represents women, minorities, trans people, and self-identifying queers. This band is important because they are a representation of frequently repressed identities in the media and society. Front woman Sadie Smith explained that G.L.O.S.S. is a reaction towards cisgender people in popular culture, society, pacifism, and the hardcore punk scene. The lyrical content of G.L.O.S.S. reflects the issues and opinions of marginalized groups (such as people of color, women, transgender people, disabled people, and anyone who identifies as LGBTQ) within the hardcore punk scene and society as a whole. G.L.O.S.S. is an example of the importance of representation in music and other media outlets. Music can be used as a platform to ignite social movements and change within society.
