Hollywood launches organization to promote women filmmakers
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science announced this week it is starting Action: The Academy Women’s Initiative which seeks to promote the representation of women filmmakers along with providing them with more opportunities in the industry. Action: The Academy Women’s Initiative will also include the Academy Director which will serve as a tool for women in the film industry to connect with each other. Jada Pinkett Smith also discussed this week the work of her organization, Careers in Entertainment, to promote more representation of people of color in Hollywood after the #OscarsSoWhite movement. In the midst of the Me Too movement and after other movements such as #OscarsSoWhite, these organizations are an indication that the film industry is taking steps to promote more opportunities for women and people of color who are not represented in Hollywood. While it is good these organizations are seeking to promote more representation, hopefully they will lead to real and meaningful changes and more diversity in the film industry.
