Is Adam Ruins Everything As 'Woke' As It Seems?

Adam Ruins Everything is a show on TruTv where Adam, a white, quirky, and eclectic man debunks certain myths and widely held beliefs about how things such as security, housing, marriage, death, and many other topics often considered taboo. The show does many things right: it has a wide range of characters, talks about incredibly important topics, and even has a fun narrative that flows through the show.

However, like most shows, Adam skirts around some of the most pressing problems facing our current political system. Gender, sexuality, oppression, race relations, and representation in the media are all viable and important topics that the show could cover, but hasn't yet, sending a message to audiences that certain topics are more important than others, which can be very harmful.

The show also does not have many people of color in the cast. In the beginning, there was one friend of Adams named Hailey who he had a short relationship with. However, she ends up dying a few episodes later leaving no people of color in the main cast. This places a hierarchy of importance where white people are seen as better than people of color.

A show as important as this one has a duty to its audiences to represent a variety of characters with differing gender identities, ethnicities, and sexualities.
