Kleenex's 'Mansize' Tissue Boxes: Re-Named

Kleenex has had tissue boxes called 'Mansized' for 60 years, until recently when they decided to change their name from Mansize to Extra Large... I wanted to write about this because you can see how deep gender stereotyping goes.

Twitter user Lisa Hancox wrote, "Hi @Kleenex_UK. My 4yo son asked me what was written here. Then he asked, why are they called mansize? Can girls, boys & mummies use them? I said: I don’t know & yes of course. He suggests you should call them “very large tissues”. It is 2018". While Kleenex didn't respond to the tweet, it seems they took the message to heart and finally decided to change the name.

It's interesting to see how far gender based stereotypes go, and how deep they run in society. When something is large, it's considered masculine which creates this concept that anyone that is feminine couldn't handle, or should be using a 'dantier' box of tissues.

  1. That is crazy how even with products such as tissues .which every person uses, we still see gender stereotypes. I agree that is shows how deeply rooted these stereotypes are in society and that at least Kleenex got the message and changed the name. I think the fact that we see these stereotypes in all types of ads and products is also just another way these stereotypes are reinforced in society.
