Mens Mental Health

The smoke from Arianna Grande and Pete Davidson's engagement cancellation is still setting but the two have stepped into the public eye. It caused a meme frenzy on Twitter this week, with tweets as below:

However, what no one is addressing is how mental health of men is symbolically annihilated in the media because they are meant to be masculine. Similarly, women are expected to dress up and maintain composure regardless of the situation. Mental health is so frowned upon in our culture that the problems of these two is neglected. Toxic masculinity reaps its effects on Pete Davidson and Arianna Grande's late ex Mac Miller.

  1. Mental health is something that is so stigmatized in society, and if men openly speak up about mental health it is seen as a weakness in their masculinity. This relates to what we talking about in class with heteronormativity, we have stereotypes set in place about what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman. If someone doesn't fit that stereotype we label them as weak. In this concept, we embrace the fact that men don't have emotions, even though that is not true and it's unhealthy for them not to express their emotions.
