NAHJ at AU

AU students just started the first student chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) in Washington. This organization is focused on the professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry and to create a voice for Hispanic journalists.

This news reminded me of when we discussed the Kerner Commission Report in class. The results of the report stated that there needs to be more journalists with lived experience reporting on news in diverse communities. It is important that there is representation in every aspect of our society, especially in the news. To accurately tell stories about issues diverse communities are facing, there needs to be people with lived experience. This organization is important because it is emphasizing representation and making it easy and accessible for students to discuss these issues and create more diversity in journalism.

  1. I think this group is really important too. Interestingly, you don't need to be hispanic to join (Prof. Bill Gentile who help start it is not). I think if the organization consists mostly of hispanic students then there will be accurate representation and reporting from lived experiences.
