National Coming Out Day, but Who's Missing?
The Huffington Post featured an article about National Coming Out Day 2018. The headline read, "Here’s How Ellen DeGeneres, Sean Hayes And More Honored National Coming Out Day." The article goes on to feature some tweets and social media posts from these celebrities.
It isn't until over 3 scrolls that the article features someone of color.
As the article continues, it returns to featuring primarily white people. This is problematic because it lacks representation from different races, abilities and sexualities. Therefore, it also paints images about the "stereotypical" queer person. It is missing the voices of a large portion of the population of people reading this article.
I think many people believe stereotypes about the "average " member of the LGBTQ community and race plays a role in that. However, I also think that when it comes to the LGBTQ community, Ellen is an incredibly influential and power role model for many. I think that could be a reason why she is used in the media when discussing issues or events about this community.
