From young teenage girls to successful career women, nude images
are used as leverage against women to reduce their credibility and tarnish
their reputation.
Sharanya Sekaram in her piece, “On revenge porn and shaming
women’s bodies”, discusses the manipulation of nudes in the media. Women’s nude
photos are frequently exploited on media platforms by men who received them. As
Sekaram notes in her article, when these photos are widely distributed women
are being shamed and uncontrollably critiqued. Social media platforms are the modern-day
vehicle for angry men to disrespect and shame women who “wronged” them and random
women’s bodies as well. This form of online harassment is relatively new because
of the recent increase in social media among a wide range of demographics, however
the body shaming and crucifixion of women is not a modern concept. It is
important for the media to be vigilantly policed on nude explottaion and there to be punishments
in place for when this does occur.
This also ties into the objectification of women and the male gaze. Revenge porn happens when a man is threatened and trying to prove his masculinity, he then uses a woman's body as a way of changing the narrative about that person. Women are used by men and when they don't conform to what they want, men try to shame them.
