Sierra Burgess is a Loser is a Netflix original movie about Sierra, a smart but unpopular high school senior, who receives a wrong number text from Jamey. They have an online relationship because Jamey believes she is someone else and Sierra does not correct him. Sierra is a confident plus size women who only becomes insecure when she compares herself to the cheerleader Jamey believes she is. This movie is refreshing with the lack of makeover scenes and body dysmorphia. Although there is no explicit comment on body positivity, this movie challenges Hollywood definition of beauty and depiction of who’s worthy of being a romantic lead. It represents women larger than a size two as deserving of love. But does she have to catfish the popular guy in order to receive it?
