Roseanne Fallout Still Coming

In this PopSugar article "Roseanne Barr Is Not Pleased With the "Morbid" Way The Conners Killed Off Her Character" the recreation of the "Roseanne" universe without the central character was not pleasing to the former actress. While the original show was notable for having the representation of more normal and less sexualized body types, which we discussed in class, the actress centered in the show was removed from the remake due to her offensive racially enflamed comments on social media. This shows how representation in media can still be regressive in some ways, while progressive in others. In this article, it discusses how the new show "The Conners" kills off Roseanne's character through suggesting that she died of an opioid overdose. While this brings to light an important social issue plaguing this era, it also is a means of suggesting her character, prior to the real Roseanne's offensive comments, had a history of drug use in a family oriented TV show. This is obviously questionable to some, but is an interesting means of distancing the once body-progressive character from the future of the show.
