The Power of Music
Pussy Riot is a feminist punk rock group from Moscow Russia. This band is important in today’s world of music and media because of the way the group uses their art to relay progressive messages to listeners. The group’s lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin. With songs like “Kill the Sexist” and “Make America Great Again”, Pussy Riot uses their platform to fight the oppression of women and minorities. In a world run by heteropatriarchal structures, this band’s voice in the media is important in recognizing hegemony, racism, and sexism in the media and society.
I have heard about them before but have never heard their music. I think it's interesting to hear about feminist movements around the world and how it manifests differently in different places. I wonder what kind of responses the group has faced over the pat few years and how they incorporate intersectionality into their mission if at all.
