This Is Us
This weeks episode of This Is US was very interesting to me because it stays in the flashback for the entirety of the episode. I guess it is sort of like a bye week for the actors.
The flashback is of Jack in Vietnam which is interesting by itself because Vietnam is a war that isn't talked about very much in America. It was a war that most Americans considered to be unjustified and simply unneeded. Therefore when veterans returned from the war they were not easily accepted back into society. In passed episodes it has showed Jack struggle with returning from war. He lost a lot at war including his brother and parts of himself. This show represents veterans in America but at the same time not all veterans end up like Jack Pearson. In 2016 39,471 veterans were identified as homeless according to National Alliance to End Homelessness .
In my experience most people don't realize that all men in America must register for the draft within 30 days of their 18th birthday. While the likeliness of needing a draft is low because after 9/11 enlistment skyrocketed there have been protests in the past to end the draft completely and on the other side of the spectrum to make it the law for women to register for the draft. This issue was tossed around in Congress during 2016 as written by The Washington Post .
I think it is great for as show like This Is Us with its platform to have a diverse amount of issues such as veterans returning to America and America's readiness to go to war at all times.
