ABC Commits to Pilot TV Show about Indian Family
Slowly, TV is diversifying. SHows such as Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, and Jane the Virgin focus around minority families and have held their own in primetime television. America is still waiting for a show about an Indian family. There is promise on the horizon, with a show in the works at ABC. Hannah Simone, best known for her work on New Girl, will star in, write, and executive produce the untitled show based on her own family. The show centers around a 30-something single woman reconnecting with her father as he divorces her mother.
What I found significant about this show’s creation is that Hannah Simone will be able to bring her lived experience to the creation of the show. Not only is the show based on her life, but she will be involved in the writing and production of the show. Because of this, there is hope that the show will be a true-to-life depiction of her Indian upbringing and not one based in stereotypes and assumptions.
This is actually really cool to see as an Indian American! There hasn't been an Indian American show since the Mindy project and there really isn't a lot of Indian American family shows either. I'm also pretty glad Hannah Simone is bringing her lived experience as biracial and as a child of two parents about to divorce as those topics definitely need light shed on them within the Indian community. I hope this pilot ends up happening!
