Beyoncé and Jay–Z — a tribute to blackness and black power
This year, Beyonce and Jay Z dressed up as notable black athletes to embrace black excellence. Beyonce paid tribute to Florence Griffith-Joyner, a legend of Olympic track and field and three-time gold medalist. Jay Z dressed up as Tommie Smith, a member of the 1968 US men’s track and field Olympic team. Smith is notable for standing alongside fellow sprinter John Carlos for raising their fists in salute of black power that sparked controversy and outrage.
Beyonce and Jay Z use their platform as celebrities to represent blackness and the importance of acknowledging black history and inclusiveness. With the couple posting pictures of themselves in their outfits on instagram, it is an example of important figures in the media using their platform to enforce the vitality of inclusivity.
I see this a lot in the media with very influential black celebrities. They use their platform, money, and power to bring awareness to the issues that surround people like them as well.
