“Elite” and LGBTQ Characters

I just recently binged this Spanish show that is on Netflix. It was a drama filled show with some serious character development. At first I had no clue that the characters would be so “different.” It was nice to watch a show where there were many main characters that are LGBTQ. One of the main characters that is a young girl is H.I.V. positive. Aside from “How to Get Away With Murder,” this is the second show I have watched that depicts a woman living with AIDS. In addition a young man that is part of a strict Muslim family is gay. Him and his partner were portrayed as sexually promiscuous, which really irritated me. We talked about in class about the representation and depiction of gay men in the media. This show reassured me about the way in which media portrays gay men as promiscuous.

Sometimes media, especially television tricks you into thinking that they are being diverse and inclusive with their characters, but then you continue to see this dangerous stereotypes being played out.
