J. Lo and Gina Rodriguez come to the big screen
Two Latinas will be staring in blockbusters this upcoming Winter. Gina Rodriguez and J.Lo. This is refreshing to see considering the limited representation of Latinos in Hollywood, and especially of Latinas that aren't stereotyped. I am still no sure how much of a good representation these films are, but at least we have folks with lived experiences coming to the big screen.
J.Lo's film is called "Second Act" its about women who works in a supermarket that lands a job at a firm with a fake resume and social media presence. Besides this idea that Latinas are working class service job citizens, it does seem like an empowering film about overcoming class odds and that oppressive systems set against women of color.
On the other hand Gina's film "Miss Bala" does include a lot of Latinx stereotypes including that Latinos are dangerous drug lords. Gina is captured by the cartel for bait and used to help their operations.
Overall, I am excited to see both.
