#Latingrammysowhite

Last night, the Latin Grammys aired. I made it my mission to count all the black folks that I saw represented and the number came out to 5. Two of which were Will Smith and a French actor who was not Latinx either.

There were also a few folks who were racially ambiguous and not clear what they might identify as. Overall, racial profiling people as Afro-Latinx or not is difficult because some individuals might not necessary look Afro-Latinx phenotypically but identify with the label because of genetics or political consciousness.

Overall, the Lack of Latinx representation was astonishing and heart breaking. Considering that most of the world's slaves came to Latin America and the Caribbean, the lack of Afro-Latinx folks that were nominated for awards or that had speaking roles at the grammys seems not only intentional, but also just an other reminder of how deep denial and erasure of Afro-Latinxs are. Even, in a field (music) that we often attribute to our African ancestry, apparently not enough though.
