Latinx Diversity: On My Block

On My Block is a show about young teenagers growing up in a crime ridden neighborhood in LA that does an interesting job at both breaking Latino stereotypes but also upholding them.

One of the diverse characters is Monsey who is Afro-Latino. Monsey's character is also not depicted in the fiery Latina way nor in the angry Black women way and serves as a good example of a women of color with her own unique identity. But we do have characters like her love interests and her love interests brother that are both in gangs and hold up the stereotype that Latino men are gangsters.

The show also does a good job of showing real life challenges that Latinx communities are facing like with immigration. One of the characters parents were deported and we see her and her friends deal with the pain that this has brought her. Overall I think the show highlights some complexities of being Latino and is an accurate depiction of Latinos growing up in inner cities in the United States.
