The "Final Girl"
Kadin Burnett in her article,
“Reclaiming
the ‘ final girl’ horror film archetype” discusses the historical context
and evolution of the character the final girl. As the author points out, this
character would be casted in horror films as a female lead that is challenged
by resilient villains. In the more recent depictions of the character in films,
she is portrayed more as a survivor that embodies strength. The author connects
this character development to the #metoo movement for possible outlets that
inspired the growth. I think it is interesting how a once perhaps negative representation
of women in the media can be rearranged to show strength and power. The #metoo
movement itself had both positive and negative effects so I think it is very constructive
that film representations of women are being influenced by the movement and what
it stands for.
