Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
The airing of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is coming soon and it is time to discuss why it is problematic. In recent years the program has been criticized as being “soft-core porn”, along with a lack of diversity - in terms of body size and ethnicity. The show didn’t cast its first Asian model until nearly a decade and a half into its existence. The show also has a history of cultural appropriation - when Karlie Kloss walked down the runway in a “Native American-inspired outfit”. A typical Victoria’s Secret “Angel” is conventionally attractive, slim, and white. Models in the past have discussed the typical diet leading up to the show and it does not sound healthy. With the popularity of the program, millions of young girls are watching these models and end up comparing themselves. With the lack of diversity and inclusion, what does this tell young viewers? Unrealistic standards for women has led to unhealthy habits such as eating disorders. The sexualization of these models has also led to the dehumanization and objectification of women.
I definitely agree that the Victoria Secret's fashion show upholds unrealistic body standards and there is a huge lack of diversity among the models. Given the chief marketing officer's recent comments on not wanting to include transgender and plus-size models in the show because the show is a "fantasy" shows this sadly is unlike to change soon as well.
